IPOH: MYDIN Mohamed Holdings Bhd officially launched the opening of its largest hypermarket mall at Meru Raya here yesterday.

The RM200 million investment project is the local company's ninth hypermarket branch in the country and first in the state.

More than 700 people had been recruited to work at the 73,486sq m premises, which is located in a developing township known as Bandar Meru Raya, which has been set by the state government to be known as a "green city".

The hypermarket structure is also fitted with environmentally-friendly fixtures, such as T5 lamps and solar panels.

Company managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said the three-storey Mydin Meru Raya mall was expected to cater to residents living in the vicinity of Meru, Jelapang, Chemor, Ipoh, Manjoi and Kuala Kangsar.

"This latest branch is different from previous branches as it was built based on a mall concept.

"We hope to offer a competitive and viable alternative in shopping choice for the northern market, specifically Perak," he said after the official launching ceremony here yesterday.

Also present was founder of the hypermarket chain, Mydin Mohamed, who officiated the hypermarket, and Datuk Bandar Ipoh Datuk Roshidi Hashim.
Ameer Ali said he expected Mydin Meru Raya to record higher sales than its other branches.

"Since it is the largest hypermarket, we are hoping to also record large returns."

He, however, predicted that a return on investment would likely be achieved between five and seven years'.

He said Mydin hypermarkets were set to be opened in Manjoi here, Bukit Mertajam, Penang: Taman Rinting and Mutiara Rini in Johor Baru and Jasin, Malacca.
